Larry and Edie Swetnam at Mantews Herefords are focused on producing high-quality Polled Hereford Cattle for both commercial and seed-stock producers. Mantews Herefords is a component of Mantews Farm. Mantews Farm originated in Lexington, Kentucky as a tobacco, cattle and hay farming operation. Decades of tobacco, commercial cattle and hay production ceased when the farm was sold.
The Mantews business then moved to Edie’s family farm in Barboursville, Virginia, creating a new opportunity to transition to purebred cattle production, while also being close to grandkids. The Hereford breed was chosen because of its docility and ability to provide excellent growth and maternal attributes, contributing to profitable cattle production.
The focus of the program at Mantews Herefords is to produce animals with balanced traits, providing our customers with the opportunity to enhance the profitability of their herd. We feel the primary areas are growth, maternal characteristics, carcass quality and calving ease. Our goal is to produce animals which have EPD traits at the 25-percentile level or better. As relatively new breeders, we feel that investing in top genetics and outstanding phenotypes is the most efficient way to build the herd which will accomplish our goals.
We feel that if you can come into the world with ease, grow rapidly with minimal input, have an outstanding carcass and be able to pass these traits along to offspring when appropriate, you might be a Mantews Hereford.
At Mantews Herefords, we are proud of our current hereford dams, and their genetics. Our dams boast high docility and adaptability, along with excellent growth and maternal traits.
